This module provides students with an understanding of: 1. the role of securities markets in the economy and their basic mechanics and technical features 2. different classes of financial assets and their valuations 3. portfolio theories and risk management 4. alternative ways of evaluating investment performance.
A. Identify the major financial assets traded in the securities markets and the major participants in each of those markets. B. Understand risks and valuations for different classes of securities and apply portfolio theories in risk and investment management. C. Compare and apply alternative measures to evaluate investment performance.
The module will be taught using a combination of lectures and tutorials. The lectures are intended to provide an introduction to the topics set out in the syllabus. The tutorials will cover technical aspects of the course and include exercises for completion. Student learning will be assisted by detailed references to the course text and other specific references given in the module handbook.
