This ESS module introduces Excel built-in functions and teaches how to write VBA user-defined functions and sub procedures. It demonstrates the use of Excel in the areas of financial calculations such as loan and pension problems, investment and portfolio management, corporate finance, fixed income and derivatives. The student will also be trained on developing VBA applications to solve real-world investment problems. This ESS module requires students equipped with the knowledge on Investment, Corporate Finance, Fixed Income, and Derivatives. The knowledge in these finance areas is essential since this ESS module assumes that students have learned the knowledge in their undergraduate or graduate studies. The module is mainly designed for Students enrolled in MSc Investment Management Programme and MSc Finance Programme.
A Use basic financial calculation and VBA programming in Excel B Use Excel to implement commonly-used financial theories and models C Use Excel to apply theories and models to real-world financial and investment problems.
This module will be taught using a combination of lectures, tutorial and investment seminars in a financial lab. The three hours of lecture/seminar per week will be used flexibly by the lecturer for discussing the core principles and concepts of the subject and their applications with students and carrying out other learning activities with them. Students are expected to play an active role to interact with their lecturer and other classmates and to “learn by playing”.
