This module is designed to provide students with a foundational understanding of film production process and film language through detailed analysis of films in relation to screenplay, directing, cinematography, editing, sound, and other key creative elements. Students will explore film and its socio-cultural background, how cinematic techniques create meaning and artistic value, while gaining an understanding of film contexts, production processes, and key creative roles.

The module will be delivered through lectures, guided discussions, scene analysis, small-group activities, and reflective tasks. Students will learn through close viewing, interpretation, and discussion of selected films, supported by key film concepts and contextual materials. Through these activities, students will develop an understanding of the social and cultural contexts of films, the film production process, and the roles, responsibilities, and crafts of the production team. Under the guidance of the module leader, students will conduct detailed scene analysis to explore how audio-visual techniques are used to create meaning, emotion, and artistic value. Reflective tasks will adopt a “learn by doing” approach, encouraging students to apply their learning to their own creative practice.
