Aims and Fit of Module

Business succession, and especially family business succession is a growing area within China, as first generation entrepreneurs come close to retiring. This module aims to cultivate students with a strategic overview of family business succession and innovation, providing the students with the most advanced tools and techniques for the sustainability of (their) family businesses. Highlighting the importance of business succession and innovation management, this module discusses succession planning, including non-family members, power transfer, and analyses the succession process and modules. Successful students will acquire the skills needed to apply the tools necessary to guide the practices of business succession, innovation and sustainable development.

Learning outcomes

A Demonstrate a critical understanding of the family business succession process and key related issues. B Demonstrate understanding of the relationship between business succession, innovation and sustainability. C Critically assess a range of business tools designed to help plan and implement business succession, including their applications in securing family business succession.

Method of teaching and learning

Based on the philosophy of Syntegrative Education, this module’s delivery pattern follows more intensive block teaching, and allows more meaningful contribution from industry partners. This delivery pattern provides space for students to concentrate on completing the problem-based and project-oriented assessments. This module will be delivered through a series of key lectures/seminars. In addition, students will be required to analyse a number of cases, determining what worked and why.
