Method of teaching and learning

The teaching philosophy of the module follows very much the philosophy of Syntegrative Education. Students will be expected to attend formal lectures, seminars, as well as to participate in practicals in a computer lab. Lectures will introduce students to the academic content and practical skills that are the subject of the module, while the computer practical will allow students to practice those skills. Case studies are presented illustrating the effective use and design of databases. This philosophy is also carried through in terms of assessment, with a reduction in the use of exams and an increase in coursework, especially problem-based assessments that are project-focused. The delivery pattern provides space in the semester for students to concentrate on completing the assessments.
