This module is designed for students who have successfully competed JPL001, JPL011, or who have equivalent proficiency in Japanese. The module develops basic integrated language skills, enabling students to read, write, listen to, and speak simple Japanese about familiar, everyday matters.
A Demonstrate understanding of short sentences and frequently used expressions on everyday topics when spoken slowly and clearly in Japanese. B Demonstrate understanding of very short, simple written texts on everyday topics in Japanese, showing the ability to recognise and read hiragana and katakana. C Communicate orally in simple and brief exchanges to give and request basic information about familiar and routine matters; give simple comments on products or events. D Produce short written texts using simple sentences about very familiar topics in Japanese, with generally accurate use of hiragana and katakana. E Identify basic aspects of Japanese cultures and societies relevant to everyday communication.
This module uses a communicative, student-centred approach with regular pair and group interaction. Learning, teaching and assessment are organised around the textbook’s chapter can-dos, using Japanese in meaningful everyday contexts and situations. Students engage in guided language practice and short communicative activities that support the gradual development of basic communicative skills in Japanese. Learning is supported through regular feedback and chapter-based can-do goals. Optional digital tools, including limited AI-assisted language activities, may be used to support classroom learning, practice and review. The module is delivered through 1*2-hour seminars and 1*1-hour lecture per week. Students will have 2 hours per week of integrated skills class, covering reading, writing, listening and speaking skills. The lecture supports consolidation of learning through whole-group practice and review.
