The Literature FYP is the capstone project for students who have studied literature as a significant part of their degree. The FYP provides students with the opportunity to carry out independent study at an advanced level, under supervision, into a topic of interest to them. The module builds on students’ existing research skills and their knowledge base from other modules, and allows them to demonstrate the range and depth of their attainment across their degree.
A Work independently under the guidance of a supervisor
B Identify an appropriate topic for research within the scope of the project
C Identify and survey the relevant scholarly field in relation to the topic
D Apply appropriate writing and presentation skills
E Construct an original argument featuring explicitly justified interpretations and conclusions
The student will identify a provisional topic by the end of the semester preceding that in which the dissertation is written, and will have a preliminary meeting with the supervisor. Obligatory sessions on research methods will be offered during the semester, where guidance will also be provided on the use and abuse of generative AI in the production of coursework assessments. The student will have further meetings with the supervisor throughout the academic year, which will provide opportunities to monitor progress, to discuss feedback on the student’s written work, and to offer advice on writing process and writing up. Students will be expected to arrange and attend 10 supervisory sessions over the course of the academic year, and to be responsible for collecting a supervisory signature for each session.
