This optional Year 1 semester 2 module introduces students to a range of Linguistics topics and some of the ways in which Linguistics can be applied to the understanding of major issues in society and culture. The module demonstrates to students how some methodologies and analytical techniques in Linguistics can be used to discover things about the mind, society, and culture. Students will have the opportunity to apply some of these methodologies themselves. The module seeks to inspire students; while it serves as a useful base for future studies in Linguistics, it also aims to equip students with knowledge and skills in language analysis and critical thinking that will be of use in other subject areas.
