Aims and Fit of Module

• to introduce students to a wide range of phenomena related to bilingualism and multilingualism at both global and local levels; • to introduce students to some key conceptual and theoretical resources useful for analysing these phenomena; • to equip students with an understanding of the research methods frequently employed in studies of bilingualism, multilingualism, and beyond; and • to enable students to apply some of these methods to exploring some aspect of bilingualism and multilingualism

Learning outcomes

A Analyze the concept of bilingualism and multilingualism and the various theoretical issues surrounding these topics B Demonstrate a good knowledge of a wide range of phenomena related to bilingualism and multilingualism at both global and local levels C Identify some of the major historical, psycholinguistic, and/or sociolinguistic issues related to bilingualism and multilingualism, especially those concerning China and/or professional communication and translation D Conduct a meaningful discussion about policies and practices relevant to bilingualism and multilingualism in the education sector E Apply the various methodologies employed in researching bilingualism and multilingualism F Design and implement a small-scale research study to explore bilingualism and multilingualism
