The main aims of the module are:
• to provide a historical overview of Chinese and introduce students to the areas of Chinese language description and analysis such as phonetics, phonology, morphology, syntax, semantics and sociolinguistics;
• to equip students with methods for analysing the Chinese language;
• to apply methods of description and analysis to the Chinese Language.
A. Demonstrate familiarity with key aspects of Chinese language structure and develop a sense of the major linguistic properties of Chinese
B. Demonstrate an ability to analyse the Chinese language at various levels of its structure
C. Use Linguistic Theories/Approaches to analyse the Chinese language or account for Chinese language data
D. Demonstrate an ability and skills to conduct research in the Chinese language
The teaching sessions are divided into two components: Lectures and Tutorials/workshops.
Teaching consists of one lecture and one Tutorial/workshop per week.
