Academic Year 2027/28
Semester SEM2

Aims and Fit of Module

This module provides students with a comprehensive understanding of language disorders, focusing on the cognitive, social, and neurological foundations of communication difficulties. It covers both developmental and acquired language impairments, including conditions such as developmental language disorder (DLD), early language delays, dyslexia, and aphasia. Students will explore how these conditions arise, their impact across the lifespan, and the broader social and cognitive consequences of language impairments. The module places a strong emphasis on theoretical frameworks and the role of language disorders in shaping communication, while looking at clinical diagnosis or intervention techniques. Students will engage with research methods used to study language pathologies and will explore ethical considerations in the study and treatment of individuals with communication difficulties. By focusing on the academic and research aspects of language pathology, this module fosters a deep understanding of the complexities of language disorders, preparing students for further study or non-clinical careers related to speech and language therapy.
