The aim of this module is to equip students with fundamental knowledge on manufacturing
engineering. As engineers we love to design and build. Understanding machining methods
and their limitations is fundamental to designing parts. This module brings you with a large
variety of manufacturing techniques and their limitations.
This module will cover the theory and practice of modern manufacturing processes: machining, forming, and casting; producing parts using computer assisted tools from CAD to CNC machining followed by measurement of part quality, and hands-on machining of parts.
A Demonstrate the knowledge on commonly used manufacturing methods.
B Explain principles of different manufacturing methods.
C Identify and select manufacturing parameters and explain their influences on the machinability and their mutual relations for manufacturing methods.
D Select and evaluate different manufacturing methods for a given product and context.
E Appreciate the emerging manufacturing methods.
F Manufacture simple mechanical parts and measure the manufactured part using standard measurement tools.
This module will be delivered through a combination of formal lectures, tutorials and supervised laboratory sessions.
