Module Title Introduction to Materials Science
Module Level Level 0
Module Credits 2.5
Academic Year 2026/27
Semester SEM2

Aims and Fit of Module

This module provides a broad, introductory overview of materials science for students, laying a foundation for students to pursue further study in Materials Science. It introduces the key classes of materials and explores the fundamental relationships between their structure, properties, processing, and performance.

Learning outcomes

A Identify the main classes of engineering materials and their typical applications. B Explain the relationship between atomic/micro structure and macroscopic properties. C Describe basic materials processing methods and their influence on final material performance. D Work in a group to plan and execute a simple investigative project on a materials‑related topic. E Communicate findings in a structured group report and oral presentation.

Method of teaching and learning

Lectures (13 hours): Weekly lectures introduce core concepts and provide the theoretical framework for the module. Tutorials (13 hours): Small‑group tutorials complement the lectures by providing a forum for guided problem‑solving and discussion. Private Study (49 hours).
