Aims and Fit of Module

This module introduces students to the key concepts of emerging technologies and how they relate to technological development and society. The module should prepare students for their continuing study and working life where being able to recognize and understand these concepts can allow them to take better advantage of the practical skills developed during their study.

Learning outcomes

A. Describe and report the principal issues issues related to an emerging technology including its influence on society, economic factors and key technical considerations.
B. Utilize computer software to effectively analyze and report data using basic charts and graphics.

Method of teaching and learning

Lectures: Students will be expected to attend weekly formal lectures which will introduce them to the concepts and methods covered in the module.
Practicals: Computer lab practicals are held each week for students to work under staff guidance on problems designed to reinforce understanding of the lecture materials.
Private study: In a typical week students will be expected to devote 6 to 7 hours of unsupervised time to private study. Private study time is to be used for background reading and the completion of assessments.
Assessments: A final assessment task will be used to test the extent to which students have achieved the learning outcomes of the module. This will be a formal essay to test knowledge of the course material.
