Introduction to Python

Module Title Introduction to Python
Module Level Level 0
Module Credits 2.5
Academic Year 2026/27
Semester SEM2

Aims and Fit of Module

The aim of this Year 1 module is to prepare students for the BEng Data Science and Big Data Technology with Contemporary Entrepreneurialismprogramme by introducing fundamental Python programming, data handling, and introductory machine learning concepts, and will also open to all Year 1 students. The module enables students to understand the role of programming and data analytics in addressing challenges associated with Big Data, including data acquisition, storage, processing, analysis, and visualization. Students will develop practical skills in Python programming and numerical problem solving using libraries such as NumPy, Pandas, and Scikit-learn. The module also provides students with a foundational understanding of computational thinking and data-driven analysis that will be further developed in subsequent modules within the programme.

Learning outcomes

A. Demonstrate basic Python programming skills, including the use of programming syntax, control structures, functions, file operations, and data visualization techniques. B. Apply fundamental data analysis techniques using Python libraries such as NumPy and Pandas to manipulate, process, and analyse structured datasets. C. Develop and implement simple machine learning workflows using Scikit-learn to solve introductory data-driven problems and interpret analytical results.

Method of teaching and learning

The module will be delivered mainly in a lectures, including reflection session and practical sessions. In addition to the time of classes, students will be expected to devote the unsupervised time to private study of course material (including written material and electronically-distributed data samples). The module will follow an academic literacies approach and some seminars may be co-taught by staff from the English Language Centre or Academic Literacies Centre, who will use activities to further develop the English language skills of students within the context of the module.
