This module aims to equip students with fundamental techniques of translation, integrating traditional methods with emerging Artificial Intelligence (AI) technologies. It enables students to proficiently utilize both manual translation skills and AI-driven tools to produce accurate and contextually appropriate translations of various text types. The focus of the module is on practical skills encompassing traditional translation techniques alongside the application of AI-based translation tools. Exercises and assignments are designed to provide students with hands-on experience in utilizing AI-driven translation software and algorithms, in addition to practicing traditional translation methods. Group projects and individual assignments incorporate AI-enhanced translation tasks, enabling students to engage with real-life translation projects that integrate AI technologies. Examples chosen for analysis and practice include both traditional and AI-assisted translations from real-life projects, allowing students to compare and contrast outcomes, identify translation errors, and analyze corrections. Through this comprehensive approach, students develop a nuanced understanding of the benefits and limitations of AI in translation, enhancing their ability to produce high-quality translations in diverse contexts.
A. demonstrate knowledge of various types and modes of translation, including traditional manual techniques and emerging AI-empowered approaches. B. display an in-depth understanding of the various methods and strategies for translation, encompassing both conventional methodologies and the integration of AI technologies. C. justify the selection and application of methods and strategies used in translation, incorporating critical evaluation of when and how AI tools can enhance or complement traditional translation approaches. D. produce high-quality works of translation utilizing a combination of manual skills and AI-empowered translation tools
The teaching sessions have two components: lectures and tutorials. Lectures are designed to help students understand main types and modes of translation and principles of translation; whereas tutorials enable students to apply what they have learnt in class to translation practice and hone their translation skills through hands-on translation exercises.
