This module allows students to acquire skills and knowledge of liaison interpreting between English and Chinese. The module focuses on different aspects of liaison interpreting and covers the mode of communication in different settings. It teaches students linguistic, technical, and cultural specificities of liaison interpreting. This module is also designed to encourage students to develop a critical and reflective awareness of the role of liaison interpreting in different situations. Through generic exercises and intensive trainings at the interpreting lab, students are prepared for professional liaison interpreting tasks.
A identify the skills, methods, and the special requirements of liaison interpreting
B demonstrate knowledge and understanding of the role of liaison interpreters and the dynamic relationship between the interpreter and other stakeholders, such as the client, the agency, the speaker, and fellow interpreters
C grasp, transfer and deliver the main ideas of the speaker reliably, accurately, and clearly
D analyse, prepare, and conduct a liaison interpreting assignment which handles common problems
The teaching sessions are divided into two components: lectures and workshops. Lectures provide students with concepts, principles and skills related to liaison interpreting; workshops are conducted for students to carry out interpreting practices, group discussions, role-plays, and mock interpreting activities. Active participation is essential in both forms of teaching.
