This is a foundational module that prepares students for their translation and interpreting learning with contextual knowledge. It introduces students to the concepts of “context” and “contextualization” and develops awareness of how the various dimensions of context contribute to the understanding of the source text and the production of the target text through hands-on translation exercises. It also provides students with opportunities to cautiously make use of contextual variables in the translation and interpreting activities.

This module is delivered by a combination of lectures and tutorials. Lectures are designed to introduce students to the basic concepts of “context” and “contextualization” and how various contextual factors contribute to the understanding of the source text and production of the target text. Tutorials provide students with hands-on translation exercises so as to deepen their understanding of context in translation and translation in context.
