Aims and Fit of Module

This module aims to equip students with the knowledge and skills needed to thrive in the professional translation world, with a keen emphasis on integrating cutting-edge AI-technology. It introduces students to a comprehensive range of translation technologies, including translation memory, terminology management, translation project management, machine translation, interpreting technology, and interactive translation platforms, all of which are underpinned by AI-driven advancements. Through immersive experiences with computer-aided translation tools leveraging AI, the module provides students with intensive training in translating diverse technical documentations from English to Chinese and vice versa. Special focus is given to translating instructional materials, technical manuals, and bidding documents, ensuring students are proficient in handling the complexities of technical translation with the aid of AI-technology. Emphasizing a hands-on, practical approach, the module enables students to engage in regular home and class assignments centered around translating representative materials. By immersing students in practical translation tasks supported by AI-technology, they develop not only linguistic proficiency but also AI literacy, thereby preparing them comprehensively for the dynamic and technologically-driven landscape of the professional translation world.

Method of teaching and learning

The teaching sessions are divided into two components (Lectures and Tutorials). Lectures introduce students to relevant theories involved and skills used in the translation of professional texts; Tutorials train students in the use of translation skills and provide students with hands-on practice of translation of various non-literary texts in the translation lab. The interactive approach will be adopted in class teaching.
