This module explores key issues concerning both translation and literature. The lecture introduces major literary genres in Chinese that are translated into English, and vice versa. In the tutorial students are required to do hands-on translation practice in accordance with corresponding literary genres discussed in the lecture in order to hone their translation skills. The literary genres typically include adventure, biography/autobiography, drama, essay, fable, fairy tale, fantasy, folklore, historical fiction, horror, humor, informational, legend, mystery, mythology, narrative nonfiction, poetry, realistic fiction, romance. Science fiction, short story, speech, tall tale and thriller. Half of the texts are translated from Chinese into English, and half from English into Chinese. By examining a wide range of literary themes, formats and their cross-cultural translations, this module aims to equip students with fundamental knowledge about the translation of disparate literary forms, the ways in which translators have approached them and reflected on their translations. In doing so students will cultivate an awareness of critical thinking about literary genre analysis. Through translation practice, students will develop advanced skills in translation, trans-editing, trans-creation and ultimately, persuasive translation-writing in the target language.

The teaching is divided into lectures and tutorials. Lectures are designed to equip students with a comprehensive understanding of major literary genres and their representative translations, and to provide critical and conceptual frameworks for thinking about and translating these literary texts. Tutorials intend to offer students a space to practice translation of different text types, and to present their translations and reflections on individual or group basis so as to encourage discussion and debate.
