This module provides students with a systematic understanding of professional practices and characteristics in different contexts of the translation and interpreting industry, including public, private and not-for-profit organisations. The module develops in students the ability to critically analyse, simulate and practise various roles that they may encounter in professional translation and interpreting workplaces. It teaches students how to develop the professional skills and personal strength that they will need to launch their career path. Through this, students will develop the ability to identify the key aspects of translation and interpreting sector, and to act as effective and reflective professionals to enhance their employability.

The teaching sessions are divided into two components: lectures and workshops. Lectures provide students with concepts, principles and subject area knowledge related to translation and interpreting profession; workshops are conducted for students to carry out group discussions, case study analysis and simulate working environments of professional translators and interpreters. The module will also involve private study, research and presentations from guest speakers. Active participation is essential in both forms of teaching.
