Aims and Fit of Module

This mandatory Stage 1 module introduces students to the broad field of Artificial Intelligence (AI) by exploring its historical development, current technological trends, and modern applications. It provides students with an understanding of the legal and ethical implications of AI, as well as the impact that AI is having on individuals, employment, society, and academic disciplines today and what this impact might be in the future. The module combines theoretical knowledge and practical application of AI concepts, preparing students for their further education and the future of work.

Learning outcomes

A Demonstrate an understanding of the historical development of Artificial Intelligence (AI) and its impact on various fields.
B Examine the legal and ethical implications of AI in various contexts, and critically assess their significance.
C Evaluate the impact of AI on individuals, employment, society, and academic disciplines, and anticipate potential future impacts.

Method of teaching and learning

This module is delivered entirely online by colleagues from various Schools and Academies in XJTLU, with 1 hour of synchronous delivery and 1 hour of asynchronous delivery per week for 13 weeks. Lectures will introduce students to the academic content and practical skills which are the subject of the module. In addition to the online sessions, students will be expected to devote the unsupervised time to private study. Private study will provide opportunities for reflection and consideration of lecture material and to undertake background reading.
